Lithuania rips Austria over release of wanted ex-KGB officer
July 17th, 2011VILNIUS, Lithuania — A diplomatic spat between Lithuania and Austria erupted Monday after Viennese authorities released a former KGB officer implicated in a 1991 massacre that took place amid the Baltic country’s struggle for independence.
The government in Vilnius recalled its ambassador to Vienna, delivered a protest note and announced it might seek redress at European Union level.
Mikhail Golovatov was arrested at Vienna airport Thursday but released after 24 hours and allowed to travel to Moscow.
