Jane Austen manuscript fetches $1.6 million at auction
July 13th, 2011LONDON — The earliest surviving manuscript for a novel by English writer Jane Austen (1775-1817) was sold for $1.6 million at auction in London Thursday, auction house Sotheby’s said.
The heavily corrected manuscript of “The Watsons,” probably dating to 1804, had been estimated to fetch a maximum of $485,000.
The work, which was not published during her lifetime, provides a “fascinating insight into both her writing practices and her development into one of Britain’s greatest authors,” said Sotheby’s expert Gabriel Heaton.
