Six ways to enjoy winter without strapping on skis or a snowboard

January 4th, 2012

Forget frightful. Snow can be delightful, even for those who wouldn’t head to the hills to ski or snowboard.

Ready or not, winter is here.

Skiing and snowboarding are the glamor stars of winter, but they require a certain level of commitment and skill.

Here we present some other less-intense ways to enjoy the snow.

If you live on the west side of Oregon or Washington, you can pretty much blow off winter.

Or, you can cop a different attitude: The mountains are blanketed with snow, so you may as well partake.

And, if you live in the mountains or east of them, winter is pretty much unavoidable.

So pick one (or more) of these ways to enjoy the snow, and don’t let winter slip away without leaving your snow angel.

Flight BER32: anna.aero goes to Seattle to collect airberlin’s latest 737!

January 1st, 2012

Handing over the keys for airberlin’s ninth and last new 737NG this year: Boeing’s VP 737 Field and Delivery John Pricco passes the keys to Captain Tim Techt, airberlin’s Technical Pilot (Boeing Fleet and 737 Line Training).

Earlier this month, our friends at airberlin took anna.aero on a special trip to Boeing in Seattle to pick up a brand new Next-Generation 737 and deliver it back to airberlin HQ at Berlin Tegel.

Despite its recent turbulence and route cutbacks, airberlin still holds orders for at least 70 new Boeing and Airbus aircraft, including 737s, 787s and A320 family aircraft, although 19 out of 50 deliveries initially scheduled for 2012-13 have been postponed to 2015-16, cutting airberlin’s investment requirements by $1.6bn over the next two years.

airberlin’s latest aircraft, its 737-800 D-ABMB was delivered to Berlin Tegel on 1 December…anna.aero was honoured to be an invited guest for the delivery flight, which included detailed product briefings by Boeing executives in Seattle.

With the speeding up of monthly production of 737s to 35 in December, Boeing is still just behind Airbus’ narrowbody production – 36 in October – on average its European competitor delivered three more narrowbodies per month in 2011. However, with its

New FAA Rules: Airline Pilots Must Work Less, Rest More

December 29th, 2011

It seems intuitive that having airline pilots who aren’t fatigued would be optimal for both passengers and carrier owners—not to mention the men and women in the cockpits. But it wasn’t regulated until today, when the Federal Aviation Administration issued a landmark ruling that addresses jetlag and requires pilots to fly shorter shifts and get longer rest periods.

A February 2009 Colgan Air crash in upstate New York that killed 50 people due to two exhausted pilots—coupled with years of lobbying by safety advocates—were the catalysts for the FAA to make these changes, the most extensive updates to the existing flight, duty and rest regulations that largely date back to the 1960s.

The new rules take research on circadian cycles and jetlag into consideration and apply to certificate holders and their flight-crew members operating under 14 CFR Part 121, which applies to the majority of flights flown by the U.S. public. C

Tourism threatens wide-eyed primate

December 14th, 2011

Travellers visiting the Philippines could pose a serious threat to the survival of the endangered nocturnal tarsier – one of the world’s smallest primates

The wide-eyed charm of the tarsier is a big attraction for tourists in the Philippines, but the fame of this unique species might just be one of the biggest threats to its survival, warn conservationists. Most live in the forest surrounding the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary on the island of Bohol, which has become one of the country’s most popular wildlife destinations.

Travellers come from far and wide to see this tiny creature, often trying to get as close as possible to take photographs, or pet them. B
